The harbour town of Aghios Nicolaos is the capital of the governmental district of Lassithi and counts some 11,000 inhabitants.
The town raises on a peninsula which spreads eastward into the Mirambelou bay. Aside, there are a port and a marina.
During daytime, hourly suburban busses connect the town to Iraklion (73 kms) and Sitia (70 kms).
